About us

Caring for pets and people
The culture of Agria is very important to all of us in the company and goes right back to the founding values of Claes Virgin more than 100 years ago. It's not simply about caring for pets in the best way; it's about securing the vital role which our everyday relationship with pets plays in making a better society.

Caring for our people

We follow our culture internally too. It embraces the relationship of our employees to the company and is based on a continuing dialogue, and a free exchange of information and ideas, encouraging a genuine sense of empowerment and involvement in everyone.

...and their pets too!

We know the beneficial effects of pet ownership and all our people are encouraged to own a pet, so much so in fact that we provide the facilities needed for staff to bring their pets to work. It's one important way to help us understand our pet loving customers as well as we possibly can.

The importance of partnerships

Agria works in close co-operation with veterinarians and many different animal groups, including the highly-regarded Swedish Kennel Club. This investment ensures that our specialist skills and understanding are kept right up to date.

A very special partnership - with the Kennel Club

We are delighted our high standards and quality of service have earned us special recognition as the exclusive provider of insurance services to the Kennel Club. In particular, the Kennel Club Breeder Plan has benefited uniquely from sharing in the Kennel Club's special understanding of dogs and their insurance needs.

Over 100 years of experience

From its beginnings in agricultural insurance a hundred years ago and now as part of one of Sweden's largest financial institutions, Agria has grown to become the leading name in pet insurance in Scandinavia.

Agria Animal Insurance is a specialist company of the Länsförsäkrings Alliance which is comprised of 24 regional mutual insurance companies together with the jointly owned Länsförsäkrings AB, the hub of the Alliance.

The Alliance is the leading insurance group in Sweden supplying non-life insurance, life insurance and private banking services.

The history of the company dates back to 1890 when the first policy was written by the founder, Claes Virgin, who recognised the value of an animal insurance company which at that time focused on livestock and horses.

From the beginning Virgin saw the importance of working closely with the veterinary profession and with animal owner organisations, relationships which are still at the heart of the business more than a century later.

On the strength of its commitment to service and its trusted specialist expertise the company soon achieved market dominance.

Agria has grown steadily over many years into a highly successful business with a clear vision and belief in its role of providing a secure future for animal and man, for pets and their owners, and in so doing advancing the cause of a healthier society in the company of animals.

Reflecting its agrarian origins and later development, the business is divided into three insurance areas:

  • Horses
  • Pets (dogs, cats and small animals)
  • Agriculture (livestock and crops)
